Pads, Patches and Dressings
One of the main conditions that we usually have when we start wearing new shoes are blisters, and we know that the pain they cause is quite strong, so in this post we give you a series of tips to cure blisters and products with which you can prevent them.
Are there shoes that you don’t wear for fear of chafing? Do the discomfort of your feet prevent you from living a normal life? Foot rubbing does not understand age, we all suffer from this ailment, often producing annoying blisters on our feet. Unfortunately, these problems prevent us from carrying out our daily activities in optimal conditions.
If our skin is exposed to constant friction and pressure, often caused by ill-fitting shoes, an external layer is formed, leading to the appearance of very painful and uncomfortable hard cores. Discover below our solution with patches and dressings for blisters.[
What is a foot blister?
Foot blisters are a very annoying and painful problem. They are in the form of a small bag containing liquid. This liquid is known as plasma or serum. and is generally clear in color. However, the blister may be filled with blood, and the fluid we will see is red in color. Blisters can also be a warning sign of infection when the serum in the blister has a greenish-yellowish color: the blister contains pus.
Blisters are most common on the hands and feet and may affect both phalanges at the same time. They occur in all types of people and at any age. Although it is true that they are very annoying, these rashes appear when the body detects a skin problem. It is, therefore, a defense and protection mechanism. that our body uses to keep us protected. These vesicles are usually more than 5 millimeters in size and the damaged skin remains on the outermost layer. The blood system then takes care of bringing the necessary nutrients to the affected area to create a new healthy layer. If we have healed correctly, the blister will eventually disappear and we will have newly regenerated and healthy skin.
There are different names for blisters. The term “vesicle” is often used for smaller blisters and “bulla” for larger ones.
Causes of Blisters on Feet
The main cause of blisters on the feet is the use of footwear that does not suit us, for example, shoes that are too narrow, or new shoes, and being very hard, they generate a lot of friction and discomfort. Socks, seams and wrinkles can also cause blisters.
The shape of our feet is also important, for example, if you have wide feet or a pronounced instep this can affect you to be more prone to chafing and blisters. But not only that, the way you walk also has an influence, as you may have a bad stride and some parts of your feet may suffer more than others.
Blisters in Athletes
If you practice sports such as running or take long walks, you are putting your feet under a lot of stress and are more likely to get blisters. The best thing to do is to take good care of your feet and prevent the appearance of blisters in order to be able to do sports in the best possible way.
The ideal is to use socks that allow perspiration and moisturize the feet very well, as this greatly reduces the appearance of blisters. The footwear you use must be well adjusted to the foot, so that it does not slip inside the shoe and generate chafing that can lead to blisters.
How to cure a burst blister: is it good to pop blisters?
Because the rubbing of shoes or other clothing on the blister is so annoying, the first thing that comes to mind is to burst the blister and let all that fluid out. However, as we noted above, this fluid helps to create a new healthy layer on our skin and protects us from infection in the process. Although it depends on the size and location of the blister, it is generally advisable not to burst them.
Special caution should be taken if you have heart problems or diabetes, as this population group is more prone to suffer an added complication if you have a burst blister.
On the other hand, it is true that blisters tend to burst very easily (even more so when they occur on the hands or feet), so it is advisable to always keep them clean and covered by bands to prevent the blister from bursting on its own.
There are situations in which it is better to release the liquid: usually when the blisters are large on the sole of the foot. In this case, we will use a needle previously sterilized with alcohol. We will gently prick the wound and extract the serum, never the covering. The following are the steps to follow to cure a burst blister:
- Wash the area with soap and water
- Disinfect the wound with chlorhexidine (preferable to hydrogen peroxide, Betadine or alcohol).
- Prick the ampoule with a sterile needle and empty the liquid using a gauze pad.
- Repeat the second step and disinfect the area again.
- Apply a hydrocolloid dressing that promotes moisturization of the wet blister.
